Decided to save money and install your roller blinds yourself? Lex Blinds shares its expertise and gives advice on how to easily measure, install and maintain your new blinds.
Before starting, we strongly recommend that you read the instructions provided by the manufacturer and/ or consult a window covering expert.
How to measure your windows for roller blinds
The most important thing to do before you even order your roller blinds is to accurately measure your window(s). The first step is to decide whether you want the blind to fit inside the window recess – or on the outside of the window recess. The process of measuring will differ slightly – but both options can look great!
Option 1 – Recess Fitting
This is the measurement you’ll need to take if you want your blind to go inside the window recess:
1. Measure the full width and height of the recess in 3 places (across the top, the middle, and the bottom) for the width and the drop. Use the narrowest measurement.
2. Repeat the same process for measuring the drop (the left, the middle, and the right side). Use the shortest measurement of the drop.
Option 2 – Exact Fitting
This is the measurement to take if you would like your blind to go outside of the window recess and cover the entire window:
1. Find out the widest AND deepest point of your window recess, by measuring as above.
2. Measure the width of the area your blind will overlap. We would recommend a minimum overlap of 10cm at the top and on each side.
3. Take note of any obstacles (e.g. radiators).
How to install roller blinds
The installation of the roller blind itself is rather simple (if it’s inside the window recess) – but it does differ depending on which type of blinds are being installed, i.e. whether they’re vertical, pleated, or wooden. If you’re unsure of how to install a particular type of blind - we will be happy to help!
Installing roller blinds inside the window recess
1. Fix the bracket to the underside of the top of the window, the window frame, or the adjacent walls.
2. Alternatively, you can fix the brackets into either the wooden batten just above the window or the wall (avoid screwing brackets into PVC window frames, as it could cause damage).
Although this is a fairly easy task to accomplish, it does require some effort!
Installing blinds outside of the window recess
This process is slightly more complicated – so you may want to give us a ring to help you tackle the task!
Maintenance of roller blinds
One of the main benefits of roller blinds is that they are so low-maintenance. They are much easier to look after than curtains because roller blind materials are typically protected from things like dust or discoloration.
To make sure you don’t cause any damage to your blinds when cleaning them, it’s important to know whether they can be cleaned at all, and if so – then how.
Typically, if dust accumulates on roller blinds, they don’t need to be removed and/ or washed. Just use a vacuum cleaner or give them a wipe with a damp cloth - and the dust will come off.
If the fabric or the mechanism gets dirty, we wouldn’t recommend washing the blinds, because it’s likely to make things worse. Use a damp cloth or a sponge and wipe the fabric/ mechanism gently. It’s important not to scrub too vigorously as you could damage the fabric. After cleaning, lower your roller blinds and leave them to dry.
Most roller blind fabrics are impregnated to make them resistant to dust and discoloration – which is why it is one of the most practical window cover solutions available!
But if the environment the blinds are in attracts a large amount of dust, think about going for roller blinds that come with a cartridge that the blinds roll up into, which could help protect it from the dust.
Before attempting to clean your roller blinds, read the specific fabric care instructions - improper cleaning could cause discoloration. And - if you have any other questions about cleaning your blinds, we’re always ready to help!
Maintenance of standard blinds
Standard blinds are even easier to look after than roller blinds! Typically, they won’t collect dust – and if they do, it’s easy to remove it with a damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner.
Wooden and aluminum horizontal blinds can be cleaned using a wet cloth or a special cleaning tool specifically designed for the job. If blinds are made from fabric, it’s best to clean them using a wet cloth or a vacuum cleaner.
Our pleated blinds are made from high-quality materials and components in accordance with European and international standards. The fabrics used for the production of our pleated blinds never discolour and are impregnated several times to ensure they keep their shape and don’t collect dust.
Pleated blinds aren’t very flammable - and don’t attract static electricity. If your pleated blinds get very dirty, they can be washed at +30˚C, rinsed in cold water, and dried in a pressed position, so that the pleating doesn’t get affected.
Remember that before cleaning any type of blinds, you should always read the maintenance instructions. That’s the only way to make sure your blinds last a long time and keep their lovely shape and colour!
